Short answer: in 2026, one English level at a language center in Ecuador costs between USD 100 and USD 380, depending on the institution. When the school publishes the hours, that works out to USD 1.25 to USD 5.50 per class hour. Private lessons cost USD 16 to USD 35 per hour. These are prices published by the institutions themselves, checked on September 29, 2026.
A "level" price on its own tells you very little. A level can last 40 or 80 hours, include books or not, or be a self-study course with no teacher. That's why the table below also shows the price per hour whenever the institution publishes its hours. If what you need is extra speaking time, the end of this guide shows how to add it without paying a teacher for every hour, for example with English speaking practice with an AI coach.

We checked the official pages of 9 institutions (11 options): institutes, university language centers, online programs and private lessons. We only list prices that each institution publishes on its own website (or, for EF, on its own blog). If a school does not publish prices, it is not in the table.

How much do English classes cost by type of option?
University language centers (USD 100–225 per level)
When they publish their hours, they have the lowest price per hour. At the Universidad de Cuenca, an 80-hour level costs USD 100 for the general public, or USD 1.25 per class hour. The program has 8 levels, and each one states its CEFR target, from A1.1 to B2. In Quito, the ESPE Language Institute charges USD 192 per course, with two-hour classes Monday to Friday. PUCE charges USD 225 per level and USD 20 for its placement exam.
What to watch for: fixed calendars (four terms a year at the Universidad de Cuenca), group schedules that may not fit a full-time job, and books, which are almost always extra.
Private institutes and academies (USD 120–260 per level)
In Guayaquil, COPEI runs 5-week intensive courses for USD 120, plus a USD 10 registration fee, with books and licenses extra. Bénédict Schools charges USD 220 for a 40-hour conversation level (USD 5.50 per hour) and USD 260 per level in its kids' program. Private academies usually offer more schedules, weekend classes and holiday courses, at a higher price per hour than university centers.
Online courses with a live teacher (USD 240–380 per module)
Live classes by video call no longer cost much less than in-person ones. ILE charges USD 240 for a 2-month module with 56 to 58 hours (about USD 4.14–4.29 per hour). The Fulbright English program costs USD 380 plus digital materials for 80 hours over two and a half months (USD 4.75 per hour). EF's blog lists online prices of "less than USD 1.95 per hour" for 20 hours a month with a teacher. That page is undated, so treat it as the provider's own reference.
Self-paced courses without a teacher (from USD 150 per level)
The UISEK self-paced online course costs USD 150 per level with no fixed schedule. The university estimates about 50 hours of platform work per level. It is cheap per hour, but it includes almost no speaking practice with another person, which is exactly the hardest part to get.
Private lessons (USD 16–35 per hour)
This is the most expensive option per hour and the most flexible. Bénédict Schools lists rates from USD 20 (kids) to USD 35 (advanced and TOEFL) per hour, with 10-hour packages from USD 190 to USD 315. EF says private lessons for adults start "from USD 16 per hour". Independent tutors may charge more or less. We did not include their rates because we found no public source we could verify.
Share of Ecuador's 2026 unified basic wage (USD 482) taken by a single USD 225 level. HelloVozi calculation using the wage set by the Ministry of Labor.
Is learning English expensive in Ecuador? Prices vs. the basic wage
Ecuador's Ministry of Labor set the 2026 unified basic wage (SBU) at USD 482 per month in Ministerial Agreement MDT-2025-195 (summary of the agreement; El Diario, Dec 15, 2025). Compared with that:
- One level at the Universidad de Cuenca (USD 100) is 21% of the basic wage.
- One ESPE course (USD 192) is 40%.
- One PUCE level (USD 225) is 47%.
- The Fulbright program (USD 380) is 79%.
- Four hours a month of private lessons at USD 30 (intermediate level at Bénédict) add up to USD 120, or 25%.
And you have to count how many levels you need. The Universidad de Cuenca program has 8 levels to reach B2; UISEK has 8; COPEI has 19 short levels. If you want to know what each level means, see our guide to CEFR levels A1 to C2. For the bigger picture, read what the data says about English in Ecuador.
What to check before you pay for a course
- Real hours per level. Divide the price by the hours. If the school doesn't publish its hours, ask: without that number you can't compare.
- Extra costs. Registration, placement exams, books, platform licenses and certificates are often charged separately (COPEI, ESPE and PUCE all say so).
- CEFR alignment. Each level should say which CEFR level it targets (A1, A2, B1…). The Universidad de Cuenca, for example, lists it level by level.
- Speaking time. In a group of 15, each student speaks only a few minutes per class. Ask how many students there are per group.
- Placement test. If you already know some English, starting at the right level can save you one or two paid levels.
- Certification. A course-completion certificate is not an international exam. If you need one for work or study, check which exam is required.
How to add practice hours without paying more for each one
In almost every option in the table, the most expensive thing is time with a teacher. And what's most often missing, especially in large groups, is time to speak. One way to split your budget: use classes for what a teacher does best (explaining, correcting and guiding) and add daily speaking practice with cheaper tools. We explain why that works in why short, frequent sessions beat long English classes.

Discover Vozi Coach →Are there free English courses in Ecuador?
Yes, with limited places and conditions. For example, in 2025 the U.S. Embassy promoted free online courses for professionals through the OPEN program (Online Professional English Network), lasting 5 to 12 weeks and with a certificate (Expreso, Apr 24, 2025). Calls for applications change, so always check the dates on the official source before applying.
If your budget is tight, check which free English courses with a certificate are open and what each of the English learning apps includes for free.
Next step: if you don't know your level, take the English level test (about 15 minutes, with instant results). To keep working on this topic, see how to practice English speaking with AI in Vozi Coach.

It depends on your goal and schedule. Compare price per hour, whether levels are aligned to the CEFR, group size and whether there is a placement test.
