As of September 2026, the clearest free option with a certificate for people in Ecuador is the OPEN Program MOOCs from the U.S. Department of State: both the course and the certificate cost nothing, but the three courses for learners and professionals are closed and only one course for teachers is taking enrollments. On edX and Alison studying is free, but the certificate is paid. If you only need to show your level, the EF SET gives a free certificate for reading and listening.

Searching for "free English course with certificate" returns dozens of ads, but few programs meet both conditions at once. In this guide we separate what is truly free from what is only half free, and explain what each certificate is worth. If you first want to know what English classes cost in the country, see our guide to English course prices in Ecuador.
Are there free English courses with a certificate in Ecuador?
Yes, but only a few, and they depend on the enrollment window. The OPEN program, funded by the U.S. government, offers free online courses (MOOCs) with a downloadable certificate, open to participants from any country, including Ecuador. As of September 29, 2026, its courses for learners and professionals are not taking enrollments. edX and Alison let you study for free but charge for the certificate.

The OPEN Program: free courses from the U.S. government
The Online Professional English Network (OPEN) is a U.S. Department of State program administered by FHI 360. Its MOOCs are free, have no cap on participants and run from 5 to 12 weeks. When you complete a course, you download your certificate by following the program's own instructions.
There are two groups of courses:
- For learners and professionals: English for tourism, for business and entrepreneurship, and for career development. They are self-paced. As of September 29, 2026, all three are listed as closed. The official page publishes the "module packets" (the materials for each module), which you can review while you wait for a new opening.
- For English teachers: eleven courses on methodology, communicative grammar, educational technology, large classes and young learners, among others. On the same date, only English Language Teaching Methods (facilitated) shows an enrollment button.
The program page says it is kept up to date with the courses available now and offers a downloadable calendar. If you teach English, check it every month: courses open in seasons.
Keep in mind: these courses are taught in English. To get the most out of them, you need at least an intermediate level of reading and listening. If you are not there yet, start with how to learn English from scratch.
edX and Alison: the course is free, the certificate isn't
On edX you can take courses on the audit track without paying, but edX states that on that track you don't earn a certificate and you lose access once the estimated course length has passed. On Alison every course is free to study, but the official certificate is purchased after you pass with at least 80%.
That doesn't make them less useful: both are good sources of guided practice. It just helps to know from the start what you will get at the end.
| What's included | Audit (free) | Verified (paid) |
|---|---|---|
| Videos and readings | Yes, for a limited time | Yes, also after the course ends |
| Ungraded practice exercises | Yes | Yes |
| Graded assignments and exams | No | Yes |
| Certificate | No | Yes, if you pass before the course ends |

What if you only need to certify your level?
If you're not after a course but a document that shows your level, the EF SET 50 is an online test of reading and listening that takes less than an hour, with results aligned to the CEFR. When you finish, you get a free personalized certificate with a link for your CV or LinkedIn.
Two important limits: it doesn't measure speaking or writing, and it doesn't replace an international exam like the TOEFL or IELTS when a university, a scholarship or a visa process requires one. If that's your case, read our TOEFL guide or our IELTS vs TOEFL comparison.

How to tell whether a free certificate is useful
Before you spend weeks on a course, ask yourself these four questions:
- Who issues it? A certificate from a government program or a university carries more weight than one from an unknown website.
- Does it state a CEFR level? A certificate of "participation" shows that you completed a course, not what level you have. If you need to prove your level, look for one that states A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 or C2. Our CEFR levels guide explains what each one means.
- Can it be verified? The best certificates have a code or a link that an employer can check.
- Does the person asking for it accept it? This question decides everything. If a company, a university or a public competition asks for English, ask which certificates they accept before you choose. On this topic, read why companies are demanding digital English certification.
How to actually make the most of a free course
Most people who drop an online course don't do it for lack of interest, but for lack of routine. Three habits help:
- Schedule short, fixed sessions. Twenty minutes a day usually pays off more than a weekly marathon. We explain why in how many hours a day to study English.
- Speak from the first week. MOOCs mostly work on reading, listening and writing. If you don't practice out loud, you can finish the course understanding a lot and speaking little.
- Measure your level at the start and at the end. That way you know whether the course moved you forward, beyond the certificate.

Where can I study English for free with a certificate in Ecuador?
The most complete option is the OPEN Program MOOCs from the U.S. Department of State: the course and the certificate are free and can be taken from Ecuador. As of September 29, 2026, its courses for learners and professionals are closed and only one course for teachers is taking enrollments.
Are edX courses free with a certificate?
No. On edX you can study for free on the audit track, but without a certificate and with time-limited access. The verified certificate requires paying for the verified track.
Is the Alison certificate free?
No. According to Alison, all its courses are free to study, but the official certificate is purchased after you pass the course with at least 80% in the assessments.
Is a free certificate useful for a scholarship or a university?
Rarely. Universities and scholarships abroad usually ask for an international exam such as the TOEFL iBT or IELTS. A free certificate can add value to your CV or internal processes, but always confirm what the institution accepts.
Is there a free English level test with a certificate?
Yes. The EF SET 50 is an online reading and listening test that gives a free personalized certificate aligned to the CEFR. It doesn't assess speaking or writing.
How often do OPEN Program courses open?
There is no fixed date. The official program page is updated with the courses available and offers a downloadable calendar. Check it often if a course you want is closed today.
